The Fall Equinox, or Autumnal Equinox, marks the official start of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the precise moment when the Sun crosses directly over the Earth's equator, creating a near-perfect balance of day and night across the entire planet.
Astronomically, the equinox occurs because Earth’s axis, which is always tilted, is positioned neither toward nor away from the Sun. On this day, the Sun rises almost exactly due east and sets almost exactly due west. The name "equinox" itself means "equal night," reflecting the roughly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness experienced worldwide.
Culturally, the equinox is deeply tied to the peak of the harvest season, inspiring festivals of gratitude. It serves as a powerful symbol of balance, transition, and letting go as nature prepares for winter. The full moon nearest to the equinox is known as the Harvest Moon, which historically provided bright moonlight for farmers to extend their harvest into the evening.
